More from Chris Woakes on Sky Sports - on three umpire's calls via DRS: "Umpiring decisions go your way or you don't. Umpire's call is there for a reason. It's just frustrating because those wickets go your way and it's 30-3 and you are in to the middle order with the ball hard and new.
"I have bowled a lot here but you asses the wicket early doors. You want it full enough not to be driven and keep the stumps were in play. I suppose this pitch and Leeds are not too far apart. Today was a little bit easier paced once they got on. I can't remember a chance from Shubman Gill once he got in."
On improving the more he plays: "I have definitely needed overs under my belt. There's nothing that replicates Test cricket with the pressure and scrutiny and you are not always going to get it right. It doesn't work like that. Sometimes you get it right sometimes you don't. I bowled okay, got some wickets and could have had some more."

England seamer Chris Woakes, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a tiring day. I'm sure I'll feel it in the morning. It felt like a day which could have been different if a few decisions went our way early doors. I thought we stuck to the task well.
"After lunch it was flat and there was not much to work with. You have to give credit to Shubman Gill who batted well."

Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialWhat Shoaib Bashir has in him is a good delivery, he has a good loop and bowls from a good height.
I think he's bowled really well in these two Tests.
If he continues to do that then there might be a bit there for him one day, if a pitch offers him more than these have so far. He has an incredible captain to work with.

Former England fast bowler on BBC Radio 5 Sports ExtraChris Woakes was excellent today. He led the attack and that's what England want from him.

Former England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialShubman Gill said he'd have bowled but I think this is the way India can beat England - if they score 450.
India should've won the first Test match if they held their chances. India are doing what they need to do to win this game.

But despite his side briefly teetering on 211-5, Shubman Gill has steered India beyond 300.
He is unbeaten on 114 from 216 balls.

Shubman Gill has rather stolen the limelight with his unbeaten 114, but earlier in the day, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal struck 87 (107) and shared healthy partnerships with both Karun Nair and his skipper.

Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialEngland bowled well enough to get two or three more wickets but the rub of the green with the umpire's calls have gone in the way of India.
This is a flat wicket and there's not a lot there for the seamers or spinners and England should score a lot on here if it doesn't crack.

Former England batter on BBC Radio 5 Sports ExtraI think from an England perspective, there was danger of India getting away to 400 today.
England will feel they are very much in it and if they can eek away in the morning then they'll be right back in it.

85 overs
A low-key final over from Chris Woakes with just two singles from it.
Shubman Gill is not out on 114 while Ravindra Jadeja will resume on 41.
Plenty of reaction to follow, so stick around.

CricViz analystThe PitchViz rating today has been 3.1/10 (lower = easier for batting). For the 15 Test matches we have ball tracking data for, this is the second easiest day one pitch we have seen at Edgbaston since 2006. The easiest was England v West Indies in 2017 - 340-3 was the score at stumps.

Ollie Pope spares his own blushes, clawing the ball away from the rope at the last second after an untimely fumble. India collect two.
A pair of singles to finish the 84th over. We'll have one more.

There are runs in the tank if India use it wisely with Washington Sundar still to come.
